EU-China relations are among the most consequential in the world today, shaped by evolving interests on both sides amid shifting global dynamics. Through our programme "China's Role in the World", we create spaces for European and Chinese stakeholders to contribute to a functioning relationship through dialogue and analysis - spanning trade, security, and international climate governance. Our work takes shape through conferences, seminars, and delegation and study trips, as well as publications — connecting and informing scholars, policymakers, and a broader public audience engaged in EU-China relations and China's impact in the world.

International Seminar on Promoting a Sustainable Banking Sector in Line with the Paris Agreement was held in Beijing to discuss policies and strategies of development finance institutions for implementing climate goals and specific cases in recipient countries.

Trade, Investment and Sustainable Development between China and Mekong Countries

In 2009 Heinrich Böll Foundation offices China and Cambodia in cooperation with Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) organized an international conference on trade, investment and sustainable development between China and Mekong countries. Since then hbs is looking at China’s economic engagement in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region. Through supporting of research, exchange and study trips we try to raise awareness among Chinese academics and policy advisors on the impacts of big investments projects.

China-Africa Civil Society Dialogue

2008 the Heinrich BöllFoundation’s offices in China and Africa initiated the ‘hbs China-Africa Civil Society Dialogue’. Three conferences have taken place since then and various field researches have been supported. By bringing together Chinese academics and policy advisors with African civil society leaders and scholoars as well as by providing research results and first hand analysis we want to contribute to a constructive global debate and to strengthen international understanding of Sino-African relations.

Development Finance in BRICS Countries

For decades, the world of development banking was dominated by a few multilateral actors, foremost the World Bank Group as well as regional development banks. In recent years, some established banks have much expanded their scope of operation, while new actors and interests are moving in. A number of national development banks, for example from China and Brazil, have entered the international arena in a big way, often operating far outside of their respective home countries and becoming truly global actors.
